If you come to the Czech Republic for work, study, or a long-term stay, you must have health insurance. Foreigners without permanent residence cannot use the Czech public health system. This means that if you get sick or have an accident without insurance, you must pay the full cost yourself. These costs can be very high—tens of thousands of crowns or more.
Commercial health insurance protects you from these costs. It is also required for getting a visa or residence permit.
What does the insurance cover?
- Illness – for example, high fever or tonsillitis. You call the assistance service, they send you to a contracted doctor, and treatment and medicine are covered.
- Accident – for example, a broken arm, sports injury, or accident at work. The insurance covers examinations, X-rays, surgery if necessary, and follow-up treatment.
- Hospitalization – if you need to stay in the hospital, insurance pays for hospital care and medication.
- Repatriation – if you must return to your home country for health reasons, insurance covers this too.
The scope of coverage depends on the type of plan. A basic plan covers urgent and emergency care. A comprehensive plan also covers long-term treatment, check-ups, and preventive care.
